In the Trenches of Hell
On 19 July 1916, 7000 Australian soldiers - in the first major action of the AIF on the Western Front - attacked entrenched German positions at Fromelles in northern France. By the next day, there were over 5500 casualties, including nearly 2000 dead - a bloodbath that the Australian War Memorial describes as 'the worst 24 hours in Australia's entire history.
Just days later, three Australian Divisions attacked German positions at nearby Pozires, and over the next six weeks they suffered another 23,000 casualties. Of that bitter battle, the great Australian war correspondent Charles Bean would write, 'The field of Pozires is more consecrated by Australian fighting and more hallowed by Australian blood than any field which has ever existed . . .'
Yet the sad truth is that, nearly a century on from those battles, Australians know only a fraction of what occurred. This book brings the battles back to life and puts the reader in the moment, illustrating both the heroism displayed and the insanity of the British plan. With his extraordinary vigour and commitment to research, Peter FitzSimons shows why this is a story about which all Australians can be proud. And angry.
Fromelles and Pozières In the Trenches of Hell eBook Peter FitzSimons
If you have an interest in Australian involvement on the western front during 1916/17 and indeed the western front in general, this is excellent. Well researched ( I recognised quotes from a wide variety of sources) and a good mix of strategy discussion, relevant international politics of the time and the experience of the ordinary solider on the ground (my particular interest). Fitzsimons does an remarkable job of weaving in highly researched personal combatants stories, and this is very effective at instilling a more poignant emotional effect. Listened via audible during a long road trip, and didn't want to get out of the car. I might have found it heavy going reading this particular book given its intense minute detail, but really enjoyed it in the spoken format (the first audio book I have bought). The narrator was excellent. Also loved Fitzsimons Batavia.Product details

Fromelles and Pozières In the Trenches of Hell eBook Peter FitzSimons Reviews
not the most exciting book. Lead up to the day of action was very interesting.
A good realistic read. Slightly staccato in style but has all the necessary facts & realism.
An absolutely incredible insight into the hardships that these brave warriors endured. Should be an integral part of Australian history taught in schools
I simply could not put this book down. Peter Fitzsimons writes with such clarity that the reader can visualise the events and the places, this book is no exception. Throughout the book I was stunned at the accounts of bravery and ludicrous waste of lives but also challenged to try and imagine the state of mind of those that orchestrated the whole thing from their ivory towers.
Cant believe the incompentance of British officers like Haigh,Haking,Gough, cant believe why they were not charged with war crimes. Instead these incompetant fools get knighted & promoted. Peter Fitzsimons has done Australia proud, good job peter, cant wait to read your next book.
I thought I had a reasonable understanding of the Western Front conflict. But I was wrong. This book is how history should be communicated. I was intrigued, angry, enraged, and tearful - sometimes all at once. What is clearly apparent is that the individuals currently representing the institution that those arrogant commanding officers belonged to, owe these gallant soldiers (or at least their descendants) a retrospective, unconditional and very public apology..... And give Jacka his well-deserved VC! I wept, will weep, and I will remember. Well researched and well written cobber.
Not personal enough. As a reader the same age as the writer there were many facts that were totally unknown to me about this area of the war. I learnt enough about Gallipoli in school to want to read "Gallipoli" then followed up by going there. This book has revealed some amazing facts but so far has not got into the real lives of those who are there. Maybe I will get to know the characters in a great deal more detail as I continue into the second half of the book.
