Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen is one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written. It is the prototype of all paratime stories and H Beam Piper's greatest work. I have read it more than a dozen times in the last 50 years.

This edition, however, appears to have been scanned in from a copy of the 1965 paperback and has numerous scan errors left in it. They were distracting. It looks as though it has fallen into the public domain and someone just sliced one up and is selling an electronic copy.

A great fiction of adventure taking advantage of the parallel time-line concept and some knowledge of medieval military history. It is a great read and can be grounds for some imaginative discussions. There are a few errors regarding medieval military technology but its is not really jarring and takes nothing away from the story line. Highly recommended as recreational reading.
This book is one of my super favorites. I read the earlier copy over two dozen times - it was really showing it's age! I am so happy to have a newer edition on hand! Thanks for the quick and safe delivery of this book!
I read Kalvan when it first came out in paperback, many moons ago, and bought just so I could have it on my .
I first read this in school, it was fun then and I enjoyed rereading an old friend. Being a black powder enthusiast and a stent of linier warfare I can now see 'holes' in the handling of muzzle loading weapons. That aside I like the story. It is an alternate dimension story that might as well be a 20th century state cop in the 17th century. I enjoyed it, I haven't read any of the sequels.
As with all H. Beam Piper novels, the characters are well developed, and the prose is dense with descriptions. Piper could pack more detail into a 300 page book, than most authors could pack into 600. A pity he killed himself, because all of the other attempts to continue the story are just not that good. Piper, once you start his works, you cannot put them down.
One of my father's favorite books (somewhere he left a folder thick with notes and maps) and one of mine since junior high. I reckon it is "soft" science fiction because the proposed technology does not dominate the plot. But he does create a setting rich in detail (okay, three settings but most of the story takes place in Hostigos). It is essentially a "Connecticut Yankee" story, like Eric Flint's "1632" series, but Piper cleverly avoids time travel paradoxes by inventing a 17th century civilization in a parallel world.
This is the finest of H. Beam Piper's "Paratime" stories. Beginning about page 3, it's easy to fall into the story and be sympathetic to the main character, Calvin Morrison. Folks who like historical military fiction will like this and alternate-history fans will be overjoyed.

It's a memorable story and deserves recognition. If you've only read "Little Fuzzy", the Federation series, or other stories by Piper, give this one a try--you will not regret it.
