I liked this book but bought it not knowing it's from 1939. It was interesting to read but not something that would be very helpful today.Tags : Amazon.com: 101 Common Mistakes in Etiquette and How To Avoid Them (9781162748672): Emily Post: Books,Emily Post,101 Common Mistakes in Etiquette and How To Avoid Them,Kessinger Publishing, LLC,1162748672,Etiquette,General,Literary Collections : General,Literary CollectionsGeneral,Parties, etiquette & entertaining,Reference,Reference Etiquette
101 Common Mistakes in Etiquette and How To Avoid Them Emily Post Books Reviews
This is an amusing and useful little book. Written in 1939, it still has many relevant ideas for today. In particular, it's not money that creates an inviting home or memorable dinner - party, but the comfort, kindness and hospitality of the host and hostess. I found the portion about the living room to be amusing, because it is so different from today. No TV, and the room must be arranged for games, reading and socializing - things we almost never do today. Today's living spaces are arranged around TVs. But I prefer the idea of a living space designed to foster human interaction instead of television viewing. Her dinner party ideas were amusing for the same reason. The advice on what sort of silver, china and glass, and how to pick a proper table cloth? I have never thrown a party where that sort of thing was my consideration. Mostly, it's just, do I have enough booze. Times have changed, for certain, but I'm not sure for the better. It seems our society might benefit from Mrs. Post's advice....
This book may be old, but we can always learn something from the Past. For example, reading the LOOK INSIDE portion of the book’s Chapter 2 The Personality of a House was not only enlightening but still very practical in creating a welcoming atmosphere for today’s living room. Despite the current proliferation of Home magazines and TV shows, the concept of carefully choosing your furnishings and then positioning them in a welcoming and livable arrangement seems to be a lost art, even among the so-called home experts.
This small book asks the reader if they’ve seen the following common mistakes (1) how many sofas are placed like unfriendly barricades directly in front of the fireplace flanked by two unmovable chairs, with all three pieces rudely turning their backs upon each entering visitor? and (2) how often do we see a comfortable wing chair positioned alone in a corner with neither a sunny window, reading lamp, and/or side table nearby...and not even another chair positioned near that same wing chair to create an inviting area for some intimate conversation?
Perhaps some of the other chapters in this book appear outdated, but how could the aforementioned information not be helpful in today’s world? This old book from Emily Post will cause you to think about and perhaps re–evaluate any preconceived notions about setting up a home. And in addition to learning how to avoid making certain common mistakes, the reader just may re–learn a lost art, courtesy of the distant Past.
Not what I expected or hoped for. Information is a little out of date.
